Reported by: Jessica Daley Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009 @05:45pm CDT Students in Southeast Kansas learn how to live Earth Day 24/7 365 days a year.
That was the theme for the Galena Middle School's field trip to Schermerhorn Park.
Stations were set up around the grounds to teach the kids about many different aspects of "being green."
From fishing in Shoal Creek, to learning about endangered salamanders in the cave, to water conservation, the kids say they learned new things.
Teachers say this age is a great time to get students interested in the environment. "We were hoping to involve our students with their own backyard," said Linda Phipps, a seventh grade science teacher.."Once they see that we have wonderful things here then they start to care and that expands and goes out from there." The event was hosted by the Spring River Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS), Schermerhorn Nature Center and Galena Middle School. |
