Reported by: Jessica Daley Tuesday, Apr 28, 2009 @05:00pm CDT As summer nears, many people take advantage of local produce at farmer's markets.
High tunnels, which are basically plastic greenhouses, protect produce from the unpredictable weather.
Tim green is a farmer in Galena, Kan. who says high tunnels also extend the growing season by several months.
Now, instead of waiting until July to get fresh, local tomatoes, you can get them as early as May.
Green said he thinks the technique will catch on. "Oh yeah, because last year all the vendors were standing watching us sell tomatoes," said Green. "We would take 200 pounds of tomatoes and sell out in less than 30 minutes." Green, along with dozens of others, will have fresh produce on sale at the Webb City Farmer's Market during the summer. Opening day is Friday, May 1st. |
