Reported by: Jessica Daley Wednesday, Oct 21, 2009 @04:27pm CDT A new program aims to stop unused medications from flushing into local streams. The Galena Nursing Center has teamed up with a Spring River conservation group to collect leftover pharmaceuticals.
The collection program is two-fold: It keeps the medication out of the water and puts it into the hands of those in need.
Under Kansas law, they can redistribute unused prescriptions if they meet specific guidelines.
Organizers say it's based on a program in Benton County, Arkansas. "It's been relatively successful," said Cherokee County coordinator Carl Hayes. "They've got courier type boxes that they've placed outside of law enforcement centers where the public can actually go in and dispose of medications." Benton County has collected more than 1,000 pounds of leftover medicine over the past eight months. In Cherokee County, they've collected 58 pounds in just two months. |
