The need is great but supplies are low as a local food pantry starts planning for the holidays. Workers at Souls Harbor say they've had a couple of generous donations recently. But even then, they don't expect supplies to last much more than a week. So now we're encouraging donations through the annual KODE/KSN "Helping Hands, Helping Others" campaign.
Joan Lewis is the executive director for Souls Harbor. She said, "Right now, it (donations) would be turkeys and hams for the holidays, for Thanksgiving and Christmas. That would be a wonderful thing to have. And of course the trimmings to go with it: dressing, noodles and all that. If we can get the meat, we can probably get the rest of it." You can drop off food or cash donations from 9:00 - 3:00 Monday through Friday at the Souls Harbor office at 817 S. Main Street in Joplin or 24/7 at the shelter at 915 S. Main. "Helping Hands, Helping Others" is an area wide campaign in support of both Souls Harbor, Joplin, and Wesley House, Pittsburg. Community drop off sites include Wal-Mart stores in Joplin and Webb City, all area First State Bank locations, Dillons in Joplin and Pittsburg, Food 4 Less in Joplin and Ron's IGA in Pittsburg.
