Reported by: Jessica Daley Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 @06:08pm CST Those living in Treece, Kan. have been hoping for a federal buyout similar to the one in Picher, Okla., and now they have it.
Residents say they are excited about the buyout, and it's about time the government recognized their concerns.
President Obama signed a House Resolution allowing the buyout Friday.
The small town of Treece is riddled with mining shafts and chat piles from the lead and zinc mining days. This has posed safety and health risks for residents. Roads and houses are built on top of the shafts which are held up by wooden pillars. State Representative Doug Gatewood says the actual payments to homeowners won't happen immediately. Hey says they first need to evaluate the property values. Gatewood also says the soil clean-up will continue in the area for those who want to stay and for the possibility of turning the land into a wetlands area |
