Picher, Oklahoma also suffered horrible devastation during Saturday’s storms. A tornado completely flattened a 20 block area near the small town. Rescue crews were searching for survivors and treating the wounded Sunday. Residents also started to take stock of their lives, and figure out what's left.
The Chenoweth family in Newton County is just one of several families whose home was destroyed by yesterday's storms. Koral Chenoweth was inside her home on Iris Road when the tornado ripped through the area.
One of the hardest hit areas in Newton County included Granby, Missouri. A tornado ripped through parts of Granby, completely destroying a number of homes in the area. Sunday, neighbors joined together to help those who have lost everything.
At least 23 people are dead after last night’s deadly storms. Officials report 12 victims in Newton County, six in Ottawa County, and three more have died Sunday at two of the local hospitals. One victim was killed in Barry County, and also, one in Jasper County. In Newton County, emergency managers tell us five people died while in their vehicles, six died inside structures and a tree struck and killed one person.
A 17-year-old girl has died in rural Jasper County as a result of these severe storms. Three trees fell on this mobile home in Avilla off of BB highway. The trees crushed the girl inside the home; two other members were able to escape to safety. The trees were literally pulled up from the roots and smashed onto the home. The trees also fell on the family car. The family’s belongings were scattered everywhere. The family was able to spend the night with family in Neosho.
Shelters are opening up across the area. In Newton County a shelter has been set up at the Calvary Baptist Church in Neosho on Highway 60 near Oak Tree Mart and at the First Baptist Church in Diamond. In Granby, Jungle Restaurant is offering food to displaced residents. A shelter is also set up at east Newton High School. In Ottawa County, a shelter is set up at the first Christian Church in Miami located on Main Street across from Wal-Mart. In Jasper County, the owners of Golden Paw Pet Resort are offering to house any displaced pets. They are located on North Main Street in Joplin their number is 417-623-0842.
After these storm passed through the four states,we received cell phone footage from a viewer of the deadly tornado that moved along iris road in Newton County. Preston Ryser took this video as he was standing at a gas station on 86 highway and interstate 71. In the middle of the screen you can make out the funnel cloud. Ryser says this is the tornado that tracked along iris road destroying dozens homes and causing at least two fatalities.
Newtonia is reportedly completely without power. Our KSN crews say the vast majority of the entire town suffered some kind of damage. We have reports of severe structure damage, and trees completely uprooted from the ground. Crews are bussing residents to nearby Fairview for the night.
Meanwhile, residents in the small town of Granby say they are numb after seeing all the damage caused by today's storms. Bill Lynch lives on the north end of town. After seeking shelter during the storms, Lynch walked out of his home to find that it was badly damaged with an uprooted tree lying on top of his house. He could also see large limbs sticking out throughout his home.
Picher, Oklahoma was almost completely destroyed by a tornado touch down. Residents told KSN the twister cut about a half-mile wide path of devastation...
