JOPLIN, MO - Empire District Electric kicked off its 25th annual Christmas Elves Program today. It's a gift giving drive for elderly residents who will be alone for the holidays.

If you'd like to take part, you can stop by the Empire District offices in Joplin and Neosho. There you'll be paired with a senior citizen. You'll then receive their name, backstory, and christmas wish list.

Emily Stanley, Corporate Communications Coordinator for Empire District Electric Company says volunteers can choose to get all or some of the items on the senior's wish list. They are small items, but make a huge difference for the recipients.

"People are just so excited to be recognized at the holidays," says Stanley. "They [the gifts] are not extravagant, often times it's things like stationary so they can write letters to old friends who live far away, hard candy, maybe a find a word," Stanley explains.

Gifts will be collected through Wednesday, December 5th. After that, Empire workers will distribute the gifts just in time for Christmas.
