AVILLA, MO.--- Avilla school leaders have approval for a grant to build a safe room addition to their building. It is estimated to cost $600,000 for the safe room. FEMA will fund $450,000 of that. The rest will be funded with money from the school's reserve fund.

The superintendent says they are currently in the planning process. He envisions the building to also double as a gym and cafeteria for elementary and middle school students. The facility will be able to hold about 320 people from the school and community.

"Naturally, the fear of any administrator is that you have some major storm come through, threaten the lives of the children, so this will be a great weight lifted off of everybody," states Scott Blake, Superintendent.

The community will have an opportunity to weigh in with suggestions and concerns with the safe room. The school board will hold a meeting Monday, January 14th at 6 p.m. in the school library.
