Duquesne Housing Petition

DUQUESNE, MO.--- Duquesne city leaders approved plans for housing funded by the Missouri Housing Development Commission back in October. Those plans call for a 48-unit complex on a 2-acre area of land, West of Katherine between 13th and 20th streets.
Residents living in the area have been circulating a petition to stop those plans since the beginning of December. That left one former Duquesne resident very angry as she says she feels those against the housing are discriminating against low-income families.
She says she moved out of Duquesne only 2 weeks ago because she was unable to afford housing and hopes the city continues with those plans. Those who have signed the petition say this is all just a misunderstanding. They say their biggest concern is about so many people living on such a small road.
"Our infrastructure is just not set up to accommodate that big of a housing unit on that small of a plot of land." says Christina Low, Petition signer.
"All I know is, there's a petition to stop low-income housing from coming within the city limits and, to me, that's wrong," says Geneia Morgan, Against Petition.City leaders only heard from both sides of the argument and did not make any decisions about the petition tonight.
