DUQUESNE, MO.--- The City of Duquesne was approved to be a part of FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program. 21 homeowners on University Circle near Duquesne Road will be able to buy insurance at reduced rates. The mayor says they were going to have to pay from $2,500 to $4,000 a year for the insurance without the program.

Now, it will be $500 and under. Many homeowners were shocked last year when they were told they had to buy the insurance after FEMA redrew their flood plain map lines. The mayor says being part of the program is actually a benefit for these residents.

"They've invested a great amount of their livelihood into their homes, and you can kinda see them going up in nothing. So, it's a great reprieve and change for them to get reasonable insurance," states Denny White, Duquesne Mayor.

People living in the University Circle area aren't happy about having to purchase flood insurance. So, the city is planning on having a private civil engineering firm redraw the flood plain map lines in the hope homeowners in the area won't have to pay.

However, those plans would still have to meet FEMA's approval. The cost of that project is expected to be presented at the next city council meeting.
