Joplin Safety Review Task Force Meeting

JOPLIN, MO.--- Tonight Joplin R-8 School Board leaders approved the installation of security cameras for the 9th and 10th grade campus of Joplin High School. The decision comes after 62 people participated in a Safety Review Task Force meeting last week and said the cameras were a top priority.
The equipment should be installed within the next few months and will cost the school board nearly $45,000 from their budget.
Another priority expressed by parents and administrators is at least 2 panic duress buttons at each of the district's campuses. Bids will go out for the buttons within the next few week and could cost $3,000 per school.
"That was something that came up that just made a lot of sense. Where the secretary or principal would have a button that they could push that would instantly notify law enforcement and notify the school that we were in a lock-down procedure," said Jason Cravens, Director of Instructional Services.
School leaders are also considering other suggestions from last week's Safety Task Force meeting. Those ideas include doors that lock from inside the classrooms, bullet proof glass, and proper staff-turnover safety training.
