2013 Joplin Polar Plunge

JOPLIN -- About a hundred people put on their best costume and plunged into the cold waters of Shoal Creek Saturday afternoon. It was all for this year's Polar Plunge, benefitting Special Olympics Missouri. Contestants ten and older had to raise at least $75 to enter the event. Organizers say it costs roughly $100,000 to maintain around 30 sporting events for the Special Olympics yearly. Saturday's fundraiser drew more than $20,000, with all proceeds benefiting nearly 600 Special Olympic athletes in Missouri.
"Fro them, it is an opportunity that they don't get anywhere else, and they know that they're competing the way they should be competing, in an organized sporting organization," says southwest Missouri Special Olympics area director Robin Anderson.
"If we didn't have the donations and people supporting us, they probably wouldn't be able to have the events that they have for us, and I'm very thankful they have the supporters," says Special Olympics athlete Jenny Dayton.
