Joplin High School Excavating Causes Damage to Nearby Homes

JOPLIN, MO.--- "I have a 3 year old who loves to play outside, and it's been so warm out, it wouldn't be out of the question for him to be outside playing," states Mackenzie Todd, Joplin Resident.
Mackenzie Todd says she heard a loud explosion at her home on 21st Street and Kentucky around yesterday evening. The explosion sent rocks and dirt hundreds of feet in the air with enough force to punch a hole in the siding on her home. It's worry about the safety of her son that has this Joplin mother angry.
"I can't even put into words if he would have been hit by these rocks that were being flown," saysTodd.
The blast damaged 2 other homes, and debris struck a car traveling on 20th Street. Fire officials spent the day with the blasting sub contractor trying to determine what happened.
"Some previous construction work that was done is what resulted in this incident occurring," states Mitch Randalls, Joplin Fire Chief.
To make sure this doesn't happen again, the sub contractor will be covering the explosives with rubber mats to stop the force of the debris.
"We've actually put off the blasting until early next week in order to get those safety precautions in place," states Randalls.
City workers will also be patrolling the neighborhoods, and will let the public know exactly when the blasting will happen again.
"We'll know the time of the next one, and we'll post it on our website that there will be a blast done," says Randalls.
Neighbors say they will appreciate the advanced warning.
"To make sure I'm not outside, and my sons not outside, my dogs aren't outside, maybe we just won't be home at all," states Todd.
KODE Action 12 Drew Moore contacted Explosive Contractors, Inc. based out of Hollister, Mo., they were operating the blast project. A representative told KODE they had no comment regarding the incident.
