JOPLIN -- The Joplin Police Department will have extra officers patrolling the streets Monday night, focusing on high traffic areas and looking for drunk drivers. Officers recommend having a designated driver if you intend to drink at all, and utilizing New Year's Eve deals that many Joplin Taxi services are offering. They say your decisions Monday night could not only affect the rest of your life, but also someone else's.

"In most cases people don't plan ahead," says Cpl. Tyler Christensen with the Joplin Police Department. "They don't want to leave their vehicle or they don't want to be stranded. It's cold. They think they don't live too far away, and they just chance it, and a lot of people loose their lives or get hurt just because of that split-second bad decision."

Officers are hopeful that seeing the high number of police cars out and about Monday night will encourage many people to rethink drinking and driving.
