JOPLIN, MO.--- Karisty Haftfield has worked at Wee Tots Daycare in Joplin for 3 years, earning $7.25 an hour. Starting tomorrow, her pay will increase by 10 cents an hour, along with other minimum wage workers in the show me state.
"It's nice. I'll be happy with it," states Karisty Hatfield, Wee Tots Daycare Employee.
An extra $4 a week doesn't seem like too much, but Hatfield says every bit helps.
"We just bought a house, so it will help with those payments and we're looking at buying a new car. It will go toward a lot of things, bills and stuff," states Hatfield.
Hatfield's employer Marye Lallemand says she's glad the wage increase will help her employees. She says it will not impact her business like she thought it would.
"I can't see where it would make a drastic change," states Marye Lallemand.
She has 8 employees and could still hire more despite the wage increase.
"If it was more than 10 cents and hour, yeah it would affect me. I'd probably have to raise my prices," states Lallemand.
As for Hatfield, she's glad the state is increasing her pay even if it's just by 10 cents.
"Yes, Im happy," states Hatfield.
The increase does not affect retail stores who make less than $500,000 a year. Tipped employees must be paid half of the minimum which $3.62 and the other half must be covered in tips. Missouri is 1 of 7 states increasing minimum wage this year.
