JOPLIN, MO--- Board members and directors from the United Way of Southwest Missouri and Southwest Kansas announced the receipt of more than $1.2 million during the 5 month long fundraising effort.

The money comes from private donations and community fundraisers. For example, chili cook offs, police, and fire benefits all contributed.

Now that the campaign is over leaders will decide how to distribute the money among 35 partnering organizations. Board of Directors President Brian Berkstresser says there is a lot to celebrate at today's event.

"Today is basically the culmination of the entire campaign for 2012. It's really a celebration of all the hard work that all of the companies have put in all of the volunteers, all of the staff members," says Berkstresser.

The original goal they set in September was $1.3 million.  Agency leaders say although they did not meet their goal, they came very close and are happy with the money raised.
