JOPLIN -- The Joplin Police Department is now accepting applications for the next Citizens's Police Academy class. The program meets once a week for three months, and covers topics ranging from crime analysis and DWI enforcement to SWAT operations and basic firearms. Organizers say the classes provide an inside look at a day in the life of a police officer.

"We always get a lot of positive feedback when we do this class," says JPD Lt. Matt Stewart. "A lot of people just wanted to know a lot o the capabilities that we have and it just helps them to understand a lot of times as to why we do the things we do."

The class will meet every Thursday at 6:30PM, beginning on March 7 and lasting through May 30. The program is free to the public, but you must be at least 21 years of age to attend. For more information, contact the Joplin Police Department at (417) 627-8880.
