JOPLIN, MO-- The state is cracking down on people who target our seniors and their money. Governor Jay Nixon (D) signed Senate Bill 689 - strengthing protection for seniors and the disabled. It makes it easier for prosecutors to go after those who financially exploit seniors -- even when it's their legal guardian or some with power-of-attorney. In the past, it could be difficult to prosecute people with that legal status.

Gov. Nixon said, "This legislation also helps protect folks from physical abuse. By making it clear that caregivers who fail to seek medical attention or who fail to provide care for an individual in need will be held accountable."

State workers say one out of five calls to the elder abuse hotline involve financial exploitation. The new law takes effect on August 28th.
