JAY, OK.--- "Safety is the number one thing I want for our students," states Charles Thomas, Jay Superintendent.
Two policemen now patrol parking lots and hallways at all 4 Jay schools. The extra security is a reaction to the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
"It will give the board some time to come up with some options for next year as far as making the entrance to our school more secure," says Thomas.
Plans are in the works to make permanent long term changes, but there are already some strict measures in place.
"In order to get into the classroom area you're going to have to do much more than pull on the door," says Thomas. "The secretary must personally buzz you in."
All classroom doors can only be opened by someone already inside. School Superintendent Charles Thomas believe more needs to be done to increase security.
"There's no other way to protect the school district without having some officers here with their expertise to help in emergency situations," says Thomas.
"It's sad but that's just the way it is," states Mike Shambaugh, Jay Police Chief.
Police Chief Mike Shambaugh only has 7 officers in his department but says it's a priority to commit to school safety. He's adding one more officers to the schools, at the department's cost.
"That's still just a bare minimum of what we need," says Chief Shambaugh.
The school district's cost to add officers this semester totals $20,000. The superintendent say it's a small price to pay to make parents feel secure. Superintendent Thomas hopes to have permanent resource officers at all schools in the near future.
