Sunshine Lamp Trolley

To celebrate the arrival of the Sunshine Lamp Trolley, the City of Joplin is hosting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, July 28, 2007. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and be held at the southwest corner of 3rd and Main Street. The ceremony coincides with the Downtown Sidewalk Sale being held that day. Immediately following the ceremony, the trolley will move to the front of City Hall at 6th and Main for the public to view until 3 p.m.
During the viewing time on Saturday, trolley passes will be available for sale . Trolley rides cost $1.00 per person. (Please note that “ride” is defined as each time a person boards the trolley.) Trolley drivers can not make change, so riders should have exact change ($1 bills or change equaling $1.) Monthly passes, allowing unlimited trolley rides, may be purchased for $30. A four-ride promotional pass is also available for $4 for a limited time. After Saturday, these passes can only be purchased at the Finance Department in City Hall, 602 South Main, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Children under the age of 12 ride free when accompanied by a paid adult. Children must be 13 years of age to ride by themselves.
The trolley will operate 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, beginning on Monday, July 30, 2007. The route starts in the downtown area and travel to destinations in the eastern/northeastern part of Joplin on a loop schedule. Passengers will be able to board or exit the trolley at any of the following designated locations and times:
• 2nd & Main Street – arrives between 0-15 minutes past each hour
• Murphy Manor, 2nd & Wall– arrives between 0-15 minutes past each hour
• Public Library. 3rd & Main– arrives between 0-15 minutes past each hour
• City Hall, 6th & Main– arrives between 0-15 minutes past each hour
• Park Apartments, St. Louis & Campbell Parkway – arrives between 0-15 minutes past each hour
• WalMart, 15th Street & Rangeline – 20 minutes after every hour. (Last stop is 5:20 pm on weekdays, and 2:20 on Saturdays)
• Bed, Bath & Beyond in Northpark Crossing Shopping Center– arrives between 20-40 minutes past each hour
• Food Court Entrance of Northpark Mall– arrives between 20-40 minutes past each hour
Webster Hall, Missouri Southern State University - 40 minutes after every hour. (Last stop is 5:40 pm on weekdays, and 2:40 on Saturdays)
• Broadway & School– arrives between 40-55 minutes past each hour
• South side of Chapel at Ozark Christian College– arrives between 40-55 minutes past each hour
Trolley stops will be marked with appropriate signage. Patrons are asked to wait near the sign for the trolley.
In keeping with the historical theme of lead and zinc mining, the City of Joplin will utilize the classic look of the early model dark green 35’ long wheeled trolley. It will feature wood interior, wooden seats, brass details, and will be equipped with an ADA lift for patrons with disabilities.
The Trolley service will be operated by the City’s Metro Area Public Transit System (MAPS) division. MAPS currently offers transportation via their curb-to-curb van service Monday through Saturday.
