Electric Space Heaters
The U.S. Consumer Products Safety estimates that more than 25,000 residential fires every year are caused by room space heaters, resulting in millions of dollars in property loss. More than 300 people die in these fires. An estimated 6, 000 receive hospital emergency care from burn injuries associated with room heaters.
Even though electric heaters do not have open flames, the heating elements of some types of electric heaters are hot enough to ignite combustible things like draperies, paper, furniture, clothing and flammable liquids. Therefor it is important to check surrounding areas that you are heating.
* Never use portable electric heaters in bathrooms or near sinks. Keep electric heaters 36" away from things that are combustible.
• Vacuum lint and dust from heaters often and when the unit has been in storage.
• Heaters should have working thermostats on them.
• Heaters should have a guard to cover the elements.
• Turn off heaters when family members are sleeping.
• Do not hang combustible things (laundry, etc.) over the heaters to dry them.
• Keep heaters out of heavy traffic areas.
• Kerosene heaters should not be used indoors.
• Do not leave heaters unattended.
• Portable heaters are designed for use only as temporary supplemental heating.
• Always place heaters on level ground.
• Do not place heaters in the area where children play.
All portable heaters with standard household outlets (115 watt) are 1500 watts. Some heaters have multi settings on them but the highest will be 1500 watts. Anything over that has to be 240 volts.
Portable Electric Ceramic Heaters
Ceramic portable is the most popular. The ceramic part of the heater heats up and when the heater shuts down the ceramic continues radiating heat. They're some new designs out in ceramic portable heaters. There is a stand-up type that oscillates and the heater has an auto thermostat that will kick on when temperature drops to 44 degrees.
There is a triple sided ceramic heater that has adjustable thermostat and a 12-hour timer and auto shut off to prevent overheating. There are several more kinds and styles of ceramic heaters on the market.
Oil Filled Electric Portable Heaters
This type of heater is filled with oil and the oil heats up which gives you your heat. The oil is completely sealed in the unit. There are stand-up and other types on wheels. Some have 3 heat settings on them with timers
Base Board Electric Heaters
Baseboard heaters are filled with silicone oil. Lighted off and on switch with 2 heat settings, 750 watt and 15,000 watts.
