PITTSBURG, KS.--- Pittsburg State University student and Alpha Phi Omega Vice President Ashley Fann was looking for a way to benefit her community and school. In October, she began puting together a "Hunger Banquet."
"It's really to get the word out about world hunger and hunger in your local area," says Ashley Fann, PSU Student.
As students walked into the crimson and gold ballroom, they were labeled upper, middle, or lower class.
"The high class is going to have fine china, middle class is going to have paper table cloths,like a picnic napkin pack with like forks and knives. Then low class is going to have to sit on the floor," says Fann.
Their new status not only affected how they were treated but also the food they were served.
"The low class just gets a four ounce dish of pasta, no sauce, and day old bread," says Fann.
"Not fun so far. I don't enjoy sitting on the floor and the food is not really great," says Sarah Poland, PSU Student, Low Class Participant.
Organizers say they hope the banquet will encourage students to give to local homeless charities.
"Most college kids eat Ramen anyways. So, when you can help out, help out because can food is cheap," says Fann.
"I think a lot of times, we're kind of oblivious to what is going on and how other people in our country are affected by poverty and so, it's really nice to have your eyes opened to that," says Poland.
Students had to either pay a dollar at the door or bring canned goods to participate. All proceeds went to the Wesley House food pantry in Pittsburg.
