CARTHAGE, MO.--- Carthage High School teacher Rashad Pittman works with students one-on-one as part of the "Check and Connect" program.
"We take a kid that maybe has a lot of potential but are thinking about dropping out," states Rashad Pittman, Carthage High School Teacher.
Programs like this were created to help more Carthage students pick up their cap and gown.
"We feel like we've put several layers in place to help students be successful and be supportive of the needs they have," states Kandy Frazier, Carthage High School Principal.
The district dropout rate has been on the decline, since the 2008-2009 school year when it was 5.1%. The next year it dipped to 3.8%. However, in the 2010-2011 school year, it went up to 4.2%.
Last year, it dropped to 2.6%, the lowest it's been in the past four years. High school Principal Kandy Frazier credits their success with various programs, like making sure students can get help with assignments.
"We have built into our day some tutoring times, we have created intensive seminars for our at-risk kids who need a lot of extra help," says Frazier.
The Carthage district dropout rate is lower than the state average's of 3.2%.
