“Play Dead” - David Rosenfelt
(HB – 308 Pages - $24.99)
Andy Carpenter is back trying to solve a five-year-old murder mystery and get a man wrongly accused for a murder he didn’t commit out of the slammer. It just so happens that his main and possibly only witness happens to be of the four-legged persuasion, eats and drink from a bowl and was days away from being euthanized.
This is number six in the series featuring Carpenter, a very likable attorney, and his beloved golden retriever Tara. Now Carpenter – who pushes the boundaries of the law – must convince a judge to allow the gentle golden retriever witness, who he rescued from the pound, to “testify.” He gets the judges okay, but then must convince an entire jury that the retriever did, indeed, witness a murder – which is a mountainous obstacle considering that most of “clues” can’t be unearthed since the crime was covered up so well.
The book is steady from start to finish. You will fall in love with both retrievers. The events leading up to exposing the real murderer will catch readers off guard as Rosenfelt plays close to home with current world events.
