JOPLIN, MO.--- Mercy Hospital Joplin kicks off the holiday season with the blessing of the Advent Wreath. The Advent Wreath is set out 4 weeks before Christmas. Each week, someone lights a candle until it's Christmas day. The weeks symbolize the the coming of Jesus, his birth, and resurrection. Mercy officials say while this is a very spiritual holiday for them, they're also happy to join in the spirit of the season.
"This is kind of our way of saying we're happy the Christmas season is here and hope that everyone in the community has a joyful and joy filled season," states Terry Wachter.
Mercy officials got the kids involved in tonight's ceremony with a performance by Joplin High School's "New Dimensions" choir. There were also gingerbread cookies and a chance to feed reindeer.
