JOPLIN -- Four state school administrators, business leaders and news icons took a seat and grabbed a Dr. Seuss book Saturday. Mercy Hospital and The National Education Alliance hosted the children's even at Joplin's Northpark Mall as part of Read Across America Weekend. The local celebrities read to the children in hopes of sharing with them the importance of literature.

"Read is essential," says Mercy community wellness coordinator Kim Kory. "It's the fundamental building block of which everything else is learned, so if you can get a kid to be a good reader, they can be a strong student and it gives them the skill set they need to be a strong student."

The event is also a way to remember the famous children's author Dr. Seuss, whose birthday was Saturday.
