JOPLIN, MO-- A local university may see a boost in its budget, if the Missouri governor gets his way. State funding for Missouri Southern State University could increase by $440,000 this summer. That's the proposal from Governor Jay Nixon.

He's asking for $34 million more for higher education statewide. MSSU President Dr. Bruce Speck is waiting to see if the increase survives the legislative process, pointing out that either way, the bills continue to grow.

Speck said, "We have every liability that everybody else does. So we have the electrical part, we have the gas part. We have our students - what we're going to negotiate what it's going to cost for students to eat over at Mays Hall."

Governor Nixon has said that he wants to tie additional higher education funding to certain performance goals including student retention, graduation rates, and improved learning.
