Today, the committee presented a redistricting map to the school board. Under the proposed plan, a total of 205 students from Jefferson, Cecil Floyd, Stapleton, McKinley, and Royal Heights will be moved to different schools. The students who will move will be chosen based on where they live.
Also, Cecil Floyd, Royal Heights, Kelsey Norman, and Emerson will all feed into different middle schools than they are now. Students will not be forced to change schools, but busing is only provided to those who attend their designated school. Administrators say students will be able to attend the same school as their older sibling if both children go there at the same time.
"We really did try to affect has few students as possible and still accomplish that goal of moving into new elementary schools and taking some heat off of our over crowded schools," said Jason Cravens, Director of Instructional Services.
School board members hope to make a final decision on the plan by the end of the month. If approved, it would go into effect in the fall. Administrators recommend contacting your school principal if you have concerns.
There will also be a parent information meeting on Monday, February 18th at 6 p.m. in the Joplin Administration Building. For a look at the proposed redistricting map, click here.
