JOPLIN, MO.--- Joplin officers point out that even though young drivers are eligible for a license, there are some rules they must follow when behind the wheel. That starts with not only buckling up, but making sure all passengers also use their seat belts.

"It's very important that you understand that if somebody in the back seat is not wearing their seat belt, you're driver's license is invalid. So, you will be cited for not having a valid driver's license," says Sgt. Rusty Rives, Joplin Police Department.

For the first 6 months, 16-year-old drivers are only allowed one passenger who is not related to them. That limit goes up to 3 for the next 18 months. 16 to 18-year-old's are not allowed to drive between 1 and 5 a.m. Unless it is for work, school or an emergency.
