Registered Dietitian, Christina Krueger, from St. John`s Regional Medical Center was on the show to give some healthy lunch and snack ideas for your kids. Here are some tips and ideas.
Tips:
1. Plan ahead. With your kids, plan a week in advance what each lunch will be for every day of the week.
2. Allow your kids to help select food items in the grocery store and help in preparation.
3. When selecting foods, discuss the nutritional aspects of the food with your childre. Example: Calcium will make your bones strong, carrots will help you see better.
Lunch and Snack Ideas:
1. Cut sandwich and/or meat/cheese into different shapes with a cookie cutter.
2. Sandwich made with slice avocado, shredded carrots and baby spinach or lettuce.
3. Whole-wheat tortilla wrap spread with cream cheese, dried fruit, and sliced almonds.
4. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich with raisins or peanut butter and sliced banana sandwich. (Jennifer`s side note: This was Elvis` favorite meal!)
5.Lean ham and sliced pineapple (drained) on a honey wheat bagel.
6. Wagon wheel pasta salad with kidney beans.
7. Tomato flavored tortilla wrap with wafer thin turkey, shredded light cheddar cheese, alfalfa sprouts, and lettuce.
8. Whole wheat English muffin with tomato sauce, shredded part skim mozzarella cheese, and finely diced green peppers. (Can be served warm or cold)
9. Rasin bread spread with a mixture of diced peaches, strawberries, and small curd cottage cheese.
10. Baby carrots, broccoli tops, but cauliflower or pepper strips dipped in low-fat ranch dressing.
11. Fozen sliced bananas, peaches or grapes.
12. Sliced apples or pears dipped in vanilla low-fat yogurt or any other flavor desired.
13. Trail mix made with Wheat Chex, Kix, Cheerios, raisins, honey wheat pretzels, and sunflower seeds.
14. Low-fat cottage cheese mixed with strawberries or blueberries. (Add a sprinkling or white or brown sugar for added sweetness.)
