JOPLIN, MO.--- Members of the Jasper Area Transportation Study Organization gave final approval for projects included in a $12 million federal grant. Joplin City Council members removed a proposed 15th Street viaduct project, freeing up more than $1.2 million for other areas.

The grant will now put in a sidewalk on 20th from Murphy Boulevard to Range Line, Expand Maiden Lane to 5 lanes from 9th street to 32nd, and a sidewalk to go with the 20th Street viaduct. City leaders say there could be some traffic delays around when construction starts.

"During construction there maybe detour, there maybe those types of things and obviously we want everybody to be safe," said David Hertzberg, Joplin Director of Public Works.

Designs and bids will be completed by this summer. Officials hope to have the new sidewalks in by the end of this year, and the other projects completed by the end of 2014.
