JOPLIN, MO.--- Thousands of people with investment or retirement accounts could be in for some good news as the stock market nears an all time high. The New York Stock Exchange closed trading at its highest point in 5 years today and is within less than 100 points of its all-time high.

Financial advisors attribute the steady growth to a stronger housing market and low interest rates. They warn, if congress and the president don't address the rising national debt, it could slow the market's growth.

"If it continues, that eventually interest rates are going to rise, and that's going to be a main cause of an economic slow down because of increased deficits," said Dr. Brian Nichols, MSSU Accounting & Finance Professor.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 14,075, just 89 points short of its all time high from October 2007.
