MIAMI, OK.--- The Oklahoma Association of Police Chiefs is endorsing mental health checks for gun buyers. The association announced this week that it will support House Bill 1240. It would require Oklahoma's county court clerks to submit the names of people with certain mental illnesses to the "National Instant Criminal Background Check System."
The federal database tracks people prohibited from buying a firearm. If the bill is signed into law, those will mental health conditions will not be able to purchase those weapons. Bill 1240 passed the House and is now headed to the Senate for approval.
