JOPLIN, MO.--- Joplin city redevelopment officials say the new Joplin library will cost roughly $23 million. It will include building the new library, a parking facility, and signage. In early November the city applied for a $20 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration or EDA. City leaders say the timeline for construction on the new 50,000 square foot library depends on whether they get the EDA Grant.

"If we are awarded the funding from the Economic Development Agency of which we are applying, that project could start as early as June of 2013 and would last approximately 18 months, a typical construction schedule," states Tony Robyn, Disaster and Recovery Coordinator.

The city has not yet been awarded the EDA Grant but are very optimistic about hearing an answer by the first of the year. Library administrators say moving to this new location will allow them to be more centrally located within the community and more accessible to their demographic. City leaders say this new library will be an important part of their plans to redevelop the 20th Street cordor in Joplin.
