CARTHAGE, MO.--- The Carthage Fire Department installed boxes called "Knox Boxes" on all school and county buildings, as well as several businesses and city hall.

A "Knox Box" is attached to the side of a building and contains a key to the building and contact information in case of emergency. Only the fire department has keys to the boxes. The fire marshal says they help them when they respond to a call.

"We don't have to wait for an owner to get here to unlock a door, we can instantly get inside the building. Number two, if there is a structure fire there, then we can also get inside without tearing down a door," said Tom Nixon, Carthage Fire Marshal.

In 2012, 31 new "Knox Boxes" were installed throughout Carthage. The fire marshal says they have 24 ready to install on Leggett and Platt Buildings.
