JOPLIN, MO-- Joplin Police Officers are brushing up on their law enforcement skills. The Missouri Southern Criminal Justice Center is hosting a week long training session for southwest Missouri law enforcement.

The classes range from firearms and defensive tactics to the best way to collect D.N.A. Officers say it's a good way to stay current with  a wide range of topics.

Dr. Stephen Verrill is the head of the MSSU Criminal Justice Department. He said, "I've been around law enforcement since 1982 and one of the things back then was that you received a little bit of training up front and then nothing again. And what happened is that you would never know what you needed to do until you needed to do it."

Missouri state law requires that those in law enforcement attend 48 hours of continuing education every 3 years to maintain their license as a peace officer.
