JOPLIN -- Karen and Adam Layne say when they met their son, Jameson, it was love at first sight. Jameson came to the United States from Haiti for medical treatment, and the Laynes got to know him. Karen says when it came time for him to go home, it was hard to say goodbye.

"I was absolutely hearbroken," Karen says. "It was right before Christmas and I had a hard time I really did especially not knowing when we would see him again."

Eventually, Karen and Adam were able to make Jameson their son, a process attorney Joe Hensley says can be difficult.

"Adoptions are different than a lot of civil litigation in the sense that it is very paperwork-intensive," Hensley says. "You file a petition just like you do in every other case, but there's other documents that have to be filed to comply with the adoption laws, which is a whole separate set of codes that you don't see in other areas of the law."

Despite the difficulties, Karen and Adam say it was worth it to give Jameson a forever-home.
