Miami Event Center and Sports Complex Funding Election

MIAMI, OK.--- Hundreds of voters go to the polls to decide funding for a new event complex and sports center in Miami. 140 votes were cast Friday and yesterday. About 200 voters have made their voice heard on the issue today. The proposition would extend and existing .65% sales tax from 12 to 22 years.
If passed, the tax would fund an $8.8 million event center at NEO's Red Robertson Field. Those heading the project say it will boost the city's economy. Voters say it was a hard issue to vote on even though they recognize the need for a better stadium.
"I'm not sure that it's fair that the tax payers fit the bill like this and then turn around and pay to get in the games and also charge our high school," says David Heatherly, Miami Voter.
All but $2.5 million of the project would be paid for by the tax. Leases, donations, and naming rights would also help fund it.
