JOPLIN, MO.--- Mechanic Don Willes knows how nerve racking it can be to ride out a tornado.

"I wasn't here, I was at home, and it was pretty bad without a storm shelter," states Don Willes, Con-way Truckload Mechanic.

Which makes him appreciate the efforts of his employers at Con-way Truckload in Joplin have gone through to protect the staff.

"Knowing that Conway cares enough about us as employees to put these things in to protect our lives, I'm really appreciative," said Willes.

Company employees now have 6 safe rooms they can use, should another major storm strike. Previously they would have used a pit.

"While the pit was the best place we had to go at the time, it's not protected on the ends from flying debris," said Randy Cornell, Con-way Truckload.

That was a major concern when it came to their employees safety.

"While this will protect them from the wind, more importantly this will protect them from the flying debris as well," says Cornell.

Which they believe makes it money well spent.

"It's probably one of the best investments we've ever made," says Cornell.

Letting Willes focus on his job, and not worry about where to go next time.

"It's nice to know they're there if we ever need them," says Willes.

Con-way Truckload has 4 other locations in the United States, and 2 of those are being looked at for upgrades that may also include safe rooms.
