National Flood Safety Awareness Week

Updated: March 18, 2013
JOPLIN, MO.--- Severe weather season is almost here, and it's time to remind drivers to take extra precautions when it comes to flooded roads. This is National Flood Safety Awareness Week. Flooding can occur anytime of the year, all it takes is a heavy rain fall or snow melt to cause local streams to rise above their banks. Officers with the Joplin Police Department say 2 feet of running water is more then enough to sweep away most vehicles.

"A lot of times people may see water rushing and may not think it's that deep, and in fact, it may not be that deep when you think about it, but there's enough pressure there from that water that it could make it very dangerous," said Sgt. Matt Stewart, Joplin Police Department.

The best advice they can give when it comes to flooded roads, turn around, don't drown.
