PITTSBURG -- The storm sirens sounded in Pittsburg Thursday, testing the new system city leaders recently put in place. Along with replacing three outdated sirens, new management software was also installed. The new sirens can run off battery power, meaning they will work even if the power lines are down. City leaders say they have made the changes because of lessons learned in the past.
"Last year when there was a storm event, the power went out, and as a result of that some of the sirens that we had didn't go off," says Pittsburg public works director Bill Beasley.
There are thirteen sirens in Pittsburg with overlapping areas of coverage. Even if one of the sirens does not work during a storm for some reason, the entire town will be covered.
