Carterville Road Bond Issue

CARTERVILLE, MO.--- "Like going down a wagon train road it really is," states Mike Smith, Public Works Director.
That's what it's like for some people who drive through Carterville. Potholes can be found throughout the area.
"Just out walking one night and seen this big rock, not the hole behind it. Just stepped right in it, twisted my ankle," said Smith.
It's created a nickname for the city of more than 1,800.
"For years, Carterville has been known as Craterville and we want to get rid of that stigma," says Smith.
Public Works Director Mike Smith says the city has run out of options to repair the roads. So they are urging voters to consider a bond issue on the April ballot. It would generate $800,000 to fix deteriorating streets and be repaid over 15 years.
"The average person it would be about 11 cents per day," said Smith.
4 blocks around the school have previously been redone. Smith says fixing the rest of the roads would be a boost for the community's first impression.
"The roads we need to fix, then we can show the businesses that Carterville can grow and we are capable of taking care of infrastructure," says Smith.
While some people we talked to off camera said they don't want to pay more in taxes, others are considering it. The public will get a chance to ask questions about the project later this month. A public meeting will be held at City Hall March 28 at 5:30 p.m.
