About us:
It all started back in college. Ryan McDiarmid and Brian Hight, roommates at Emporia State University, decided to make candles for Christmas presents. The gifts were well-received and it was fun to learn something new. After college, the two discovered that a beautiful, historic, and unfortunately decrepit, mansion had come up for sale.

Full of ambition, they decided to buy the old house, restore it to its original grandeur, and make it into a holistic retreat where weary souls could come to find peace. The house would come to be known as Magnolia Inn. Obviously, a project of this magnitude would require a lot of time, hard work and money.

The two began to devise ways to earn income while working on the house. They drew from the knowledge they had gained during college and began making candles in the kitchen of Magnolia Inn.

They were a hit! Slowly, Magnolia Candle Company found followers, so in the spring of 2008, Ryan and Brian decided to take the candle operation downtown. They rented a handsome historic brick building in the heart of the Downtown Independence Historic District just off of Main on Penn, the two major streets in town.

Magnolia Health & Home was born.

But candles alone wouldn't support a store and a restoration, so Ryan and Brian learned how to make bath & body products and decided to carry loose-leaf teas, herbs & spices, scented oils and gifts.

The restoration of Magnolia Inn continues, and with the ongoing support of the store, the dream will happen.

Mission Statement

Did you know that over 5,000 people die each year from distracted driving in the United States alone?

Did you also know that studies show that texting while driving impairs a driver in the same manner as being legally intoxicated?

That's why KSNF, KODE, and Fourstateshomepage.com are teaming up with Hershewe Law Firm, First Missouri Insurance, Freeman Health System, and McDonald County Telephone to bring you Four States No Text Zone! This is a new program meant to do one thing: get all drivers in the four state area to pledge to never text while driving.

Help us put the brakes on texting and driving. Click below and sign the pledge, visit any of our sponsors to pick up your thumb band, and then follow through on your word. We're all counting on you.
