Cherokee County, KS- Five abandoned and starving animals are recovering after being rescued from squalid conditions. Officials confiscated three horses and two burros from a property in Cherokee County. Officials discovered another dead horse when they arrived on the scene. A neighbor of the property says the owners moved away two years ago, leaving the animals behind. After being contacted about the situation, Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves says he talked with the animals owners, asking them to find care for the neglected livestock. When that did not happen, he arranged for the animals to be looked at by a vet and then moved to an area ranch. Groves says all five animals are in bad shape. He says cases like this can be frustrating, because finding another home for the animals can be very difficult. Groves says hell turn the case files over to the Cherokee County Attorney, who will then decide whether to file charges against the animals owner.
