Spring Pet Safety

JOPLIN, MO - The Humane Society reminds pet owners that during the spring it's crucial to look out for your animal's safety, because the weather is constantly changing. April can be a dangerous month for pets because of it's severe storms and sometimes early onset of warm weather. Also, more bugs and ticks are in the grass that can easily attach to animals and be transported inside your home.
"One of the big ones is heat stroke," said Tianna Fisher, Community Outreach Coordinator with the Humane Society. "As the weather warms up people tend to want to take their pet with them on a trip to the store. Things like that can be extremely dangerous, the temperature in a car can reach 120 degrees within just a matter of minutes," she added.
Plants are another hazard. The pollen in some plants like lilacs, that bloom in the spring can be poisonous to animals.
