New Program Aims To Help Families Adopt Right Pet

Animal Adoption and Resource Center Shelter Manager Lisa Buehler says every day is an uphill battle to find good homes for so many animals.  "We don't want to turn an animal away,  because we don't want to see an animal out on the street."  Buehler explains.  "But sometimes there are simply no cages left in the building."

Hundreds of cats and dogs are dropped off at the facility each month, some find new homes, some don't.  Right now they have 305 animals and at capacity.  So in order to get those pets into homes, the center has launched a new program called Unleash Their Hope.

The program allows families to foster an animal for a short amount of time.  Organizers say if the pet isn't the right match for the family, just bring the animal back, and try another one.  "We provide everything you'll need."  Buehler says.  "We can give you food.  We can give you crates.  We can give you blankets, whatever you need to take care of the animal while it's in your care.  You just kind of throw in the love, and the time."

Virginia Vick, and her husband Walter plan to start fostering animals as soon as she is moved into their new home.  Vick says she's a long time dog owner, and this program will help a lot of families find the right pet to love.  "This gives you the chance to experience a number of dogs."  Vick explains.  "To know if you can even care for a dog, and give you a chance to know what you want."

Lauren Stebbins is already fostering two Boxer's at her home in Webb City.  She says even though she knows the dogs aren't going to be permanent members of the family, she wants to do what she can to find them a good home.  "I want them to have a successful adoption.  I don't want them to go home with somebody and you know, chew up their couch."
