JOPLIN, MO.--An area organization raises thousands of dollars to help those who are mentally ill.

NAMI or the National Alliance of Mental Illness held their 6th annual NAMI Walks NAMI Rocks event this afternoon.

More than 200 area residents raised more than 7 thousand dollars over the past 5 months to help people with mental illness.

The money was given to the organization at the event.

Organizers say the more funds they have to provide support and education the more hope there is.

NAMI Joplin Walk Coordinator Kathleen Moffett says,

"We're out here to let people know that there is help and there is hope, and we're busting the stigma of mental illness."

Some of the contributors also walked a few miles as part of the event.
