JOPLIN, MO - Helmets are generally used for riding a bike or operating some type of moving vehicle, but the CDC recommends having one on hand during weather emergencies as well. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest adding a helmet to your storm survival kit as an extra precaution during severe storms.

The group issued a statement saying this recommendation is based on inquiries from safety groups. They also considered reported cases of children surviving storms while wearing protective head gear.

"Helmets are not a bad idea, there is no research to prove or disprove the idea," said Keith Stammer, Joplin-Jasper County Emergency Management Director. "My recommendation would be don't take time to put on the helmet first, go to your shelter and already have it there," he added. CDC experts say the best way to prepare is having a helmet readily available in your car or storm shelter.
