COLUMBUS -- As Christmas gets closer, more families are buying gifts and putting them under the tree. However, before you do that, there are some precautions you should take. Investigators like Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves and his deputies are usually the first ones to get called when people get ripped off, and he says shoppers can be easy targets for would-be thieves.

"Everyone is out shopping, and they may be buying expensive items that aren't necessarily easy targets, but targets for people who are going to commit crimes."

Groves does offer some suggestions to keep your presents from falling into the wrong hands. He says do not leave boxes for expensive items in plain view, and if you buy any items with serial numbers write them down and keep them in a safe place. Also, remember to lock your house and car when you leave them, and park your vehicle in well-lit areas if you are shopping at night.
