PITTSBURG, KS.--- Today, a panel of Pittsburg State University and state leaders met to work out a comprehensive plan on how to best protect students and faculty if the school were hit by a severe tornado.

They rehearsed a very detailed scenario focusing on how to get people to tornado safe areas on campus and the effectiveness of their established mass communication systems.

The regional coordinator of the Kansas Division of Emergency Management says PSU is the first university in the area that has undergone this type of disaster training.

"It is great to have everybody involved in a university come to the table and discuss a disaster, it tells me that they are very interested and willing to do the things that they need to do to protect the students and their faculty here," says Jackie Miller, Kansas Division of Emergency Management.

"We feel responsible for 7,000 students everyday, so you can imagine that is a huge responsibility, so we take safety and security of our students and faculty very seriously and I think this demonstrates that," says Steve Scott, PSU President.

University leaders say the next phase of this training is to brief all faculty members on the updated tornado response plan, they are also working to unveil their new system within the upcoming months.
